Title: Filament Flasher Candy Wrapper

Minimum Bid: $100

Description:
I’ve got great memories as a kid of spending time at “the lake”.  So when I saw the metal wall mounted “lily pads” complete with gemstone effect at the ReStore my design concept took off. The wall mount was later cut into individual pieces and an inverted light fixture looked good as a blossom. A role of filament was cut for stamens and an orange light with metal backing made for a great design detail and was also practical for attaching the light fixture to the table. The flasher is symbolic of fish life, and the candy wrapper symbolizes the picnic and good times spent at the lake. An effort was made to make this table structurally sound by using epoxy and wood screws where needed. A layer of varathane was painted on top to      protect the image.

Dimensions: 21" (diameter), 21" (height)

About the Artist:
Motivated by a long-standing love of art, I paint to express the emotion I feel for the world around me. With nature as my primary source of inspiration, I see the finished painting as a recorded dialogue between random and deliberate processes - ultimately interpreted by the viewer.

I have been painting for many years and maintain a working studio. The drive to create has been with me all my life. In my twenties, I apprenticed in the jewellery trade and became a gold/silversmith. The transition to painting was made for its total freedom of expression.

Title:  Starry Night

Minimum Bid: $400

Description: Kitchen cupboard door with shards of stained glass applied, grouted then painted.

Dimensions: 24" (length) x 24" (width)

About the Artist:
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that one day I would be an artist, much less a mosaic artist! I remember many years ago, I was admiring a landscape mosaic made of tinted grains, I was blown away at the detail and intricacy. A few years after that, I found myself working with stained glass. I had a lot of scraps leftover and decided to try making some mosaics. One day I was looking at Van Gogh's Starry Night and thought that his paint strokes looked a lot like the glass cuttings I had on my work table, so I thought it would be fun to try and reproduce his work as a stained glass mosaic. It turned out pretty good! Then I was looking at Emily Carr's works and realized that the brush strokes could also be transformed into a mosaic. As I was reproducing the "Masters" I was also learning about art so I started to make my own art, and here I am!

Jesika Edison

Title:  Industrial Style Floor Lamp

Minimum Bid: $100

Description: After finding three unique pieces at the ReStore, I decided to turn an old rustic step ladder into a beautiful industrial-style floor lamp. The wooden crate and shelf I found fit perfectly into place while adding storage and structure, both of which can easily be removed to allow the ladder to fold up again for easy transport. I also included a couple of old school chalkboard to the drop-down shelf and a vintage-style jar for added functionality. All the wood was treated with a light stain to give it an aged look and added protection.

Dimensions: 19" (length), 45.5" (height), 32" (depth)

About the Artist:
Jesika has a background in studio art as well as period costume design and is inspired to create new things out of old pieces or found objects. She loves up-cycling and creating functional art and has been creative and artistic all her life, including being a talented a seamstress.

Title:  Arbutus Cove Sequence

Minimum Bid: $100

Description: Is what goes on outside the frame of a single photograph party of the art? We all think beyond the frame as we look at photos. This sequence of 11 images can be read like a wordless comic book. It can be viewed as a single image or a gallery of 11 discreet works.

Dimensions: 12" (length), 9.5" (height), 3" (depth)

Minimum Bid: $200

Description: In 2016 I participated in the Habitat for Humanity Victoria’s Take A Seat fundraiser. My choice of subject matter was Vincent Van Gogh’s iconic chair. For this year’s fundraiser, I chose to honour Emily Carr. It seemed fitting to create an altarpiece for this revered woman and her contributions to the history of Vancouver Island and Canadian art. Dimensions: 24" (length), 32" (width), 5" (depth)

About the Artist:

In the late 1990’s, Spiff was a partner in a small portable saw mill operation, amassing several thousand board feet of various species of BC sourced lumber. Rare Dutch Elm (Ulmus hollandica), salvaged from trees that once stood on the road to the former Colony Farm in Coquitlam BC, comprises the bulk of his fiber supply and inspires his creations.

Title:  Windows On Victoria

Minimum Bid: $150

Description: This work features seven beautiful Victoria, BC sites captured by the artist. They are thought fully framed in revitalized deep frames from the ReStore. Each frame has been chalk painted and waxed to provide a timeless barn-board look and images can be conveniently changed if desired.

Dimensions: 28.5" (length), 22" (width)

About the Artist:
My work, which includes acrylic and oil painting as well as a little photography, is primarily a reflection of my life, my experiences and relationships. Capturing and reflecting beauty (in its immeasurably varied forms) as well as emotions, are strong influences in my work.

I have been a student of art my whole life. In 2013, I went to Umbria, Italy to attend the International School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture. As well I spent time in Liguria, Italy at an art residency. Through these experiences I was able to broaden my exposure and appreciation of some of the finest art and artists of both the Renaissance period and today.

I believe that all of our experiences, perceptions and emotions can and will emerge, given the chance, in and through the art individuals create. I am inspired by many artists and styles, paramount among those are some of the renaissance masters, pioneers of abstract expressionism, such as Stella, Reinhart, and surrealist Salvador Dali.

Title:  Cart On the Cliff

Minimum Bid: $100

Description: Three panels on a rolling cart painted to depict the cliff face (with foxglove at the base), rising to Douglas Fir and the sky — as seen from my studio window on Salt Spring Island.

Dimensions: 20" (length), 33" (height), 20" (depth)

About the Artist:
My approach to art is similar to my approach to life: I relish variety. My formal education was decidedly un-artistic; degrees in sociology and criminology led to years of highly analytical work. Meanwhile, a part of me yearned for something more expressive, and I found myself drawn to painting (in particular, to portraiture), with a nagging certainty that “I can do that”. I was fortunate to come under the tutelage of master portraitist Bob Gerbracht whose instruction was in pastel, a medium that I immediately embraced for its vibrancy and spontaneity.

Often my portraits or figurative paintings have a narrative quality, with a focus on dramatic lighting that emphasizes mood and emotion. But no matter what I’m painting, I want the image to convey a positive energy, allowing the viewer to connect with the joy of life.

Hilary Mackey

Title:  Sanderella

Minimum Bid: $75

Description: I found a well constructed vintage dresser with dated front. I sanded the aging, battered veneer, then chiselled off ugly glued-on overlays from the bottom three drawers. After starting to paint with Fusion paint, I eliminated the veneer lines that pretended to be multiple drawers at the top. I then drilled new holes and attached “new” hardware. In the true spirit of faux painting, I added a third layer of painted effects, then applied a flat varnish for durability.

Dimensions: 40" (length), 43" (width), 20.5" (depth)

About the Artist:
Hilary has worked with fabric all her life, particularly silk, and showed/sold her "Silken Mosaics" wearable art pieces for years in Vancouver & beyond. (East Side Culture Crawl, Where Vancouver and other media; various commissions & fundraisers.) These days, Hilary's creative focus is on transforming a suburban lot into a garden oasis, (Mother's Day Garden Tour, Gardens West.) where her clients come for counselling/bodywork.

Suzanne Ryan & Tony Rushworth

Title:  Together At Last

Minimum Bid: $100

Description: After spending years at opposite ends of the table, they are “together at last!”
*Created through a collaboration between Suzanne Ryan and Tony Rushworth

Dimensions: 38.5" (length), 18.5" (width), 35.5" (depth)

About the Artist:
Suzanne lives in Victoria with her husband Joshua. She enjoys writing poetry, and one day plans to write a book. Suzanne also loves creative expression in art. She feels that art can connect people when words can’t. Everyone, no matter what language they speak, or even if they use sign language, can be brought together in the discussion of interpretation and the pure enjoyment of the art itself.

The main mediums that Suzanne uses are acrylic and watercolor paint, chalk and oil pastels, and pen and ink. She has worked on numerous chair projects in the past and was part of a “Chair-a-tea” art event in 2013. Suzanne enjoys putting emotion and color in most of her art pieces, but sometimes feels that black and white art can portray more emotion depending on what it is.

Gera Scott Chandler

Title:  Paralleveled Bunraku

Minimum Bid: $150

Description: On my first materials-collection visit to ReStore I was drawn to the worn patinas and textures of the old sanders, saws and spirit levels. They suggested the very subdued palate. As I wandered through the store my basket began to fill. A battered framed print looked much more interesting on the back than the front. Little metal thingumabobs would be perfect for lifting objects off the surface for a three dimensional effect. A hinged tin box was ready to hold a secret. I had a wonderful collection of ingredients but when I took them home and began to work on a   composition I knew something was missing. On a second visit I explored the used books and magazines and found a copy of “The Shogun        Inheritance”. The photo of Bunraku puppets scattered on stones was the “keystone” for the piece. This unsettling image launched the strange combination of reality and fantasy generated by the quirky combination of tools designed for     abrasion and measurement soothed by the  beautiful aesthetic of Japan.

Dimensions: 19" (length), 36" (width), 2.4" (depth)

About the Artist:
Gera Scott Chandler has lived on the West Coast of Canada all her life. She studied art at Emily Carr until her parenting responsibilities took priority. Gera soon discovered that the Internet was populated with communities of artists willing to share ideas, techniques and encouragement and she was able to continue self-directed studies from home. She spent several years focused upon ceramics, paper-mache, book, basketry and gourd arts and was eventually led to polymer clay, which has  proven to be the perfect foundation for her mixed media approach. Gera has been a full time  artisan since 1997 and her work is in collections in Canada, USA, Europe, Australia and Japan. She has  been involved in juried shows including Sooke Fine Arts, Sidney Fine Arts and The International Polymer Clay Artists Association's Progress and Possibilities Exhibition in Baltimore, as well as juried shows presented by the Island Artisans Association. She has developed a series of polymer clay workshops  which she has taught in BC and Ontario. Gera belongs to The Crafts Council of British Columbia, The International Polymer Clay Artists Guild, The Islands Artisans  Association , The Victoria Arts Council and The Oak Bay Community Artists Society.

I particularly enjoy seeing what and how items can be seen differently in order to express or reflect another point of view or an idea. For me this leads to insights, laughter and connections that I may not have experienced otherwise. Title:  Dweller of the Deep

Minimum Bid: $300

Description: Wood and metal sculpture of a deep sea fish. Materials used include a coffee table (wood source), brass kickplate, drills (electric and manual), forks and various  hardware.

* Electric plug to be installed after the event.

Dimensions: Base - 21.5" (length), 25.5" (width); 23.5" (height)

About the Artist:
From earliest times, man has created art depicting animals.  Countless artifacts unearthed from ancient civilizations: sculpture, petroglyphs, jewellery and ceramics, reveal our age old connection to the natural world. By using wood and metal that has been re-claimed, re-cycled and re-purposed, my goal is to create work that captures the grace, power and beauty of animals. I guess you could say I'm attempting to make modern artifacts.

I have always made things. During my career as a stonemason, I always kept a spark of creativity alive through drawing, printmaking and woodcarving.

About the Artist:
Above and beyond all else, I’m an artist.  I have always known that creativity & inspiration are part of my life force. I discovered my artistic and business talents early in elementary school as I sold some of my first works of art at recess for snack money (yes I did get in trouble for it). After finishing high school in Ontario I completed university degrees in Psychology & Religion. I was encouraged by my family to work in the church. I tried it for a few years but naturally gravitated away from the church into the business and charitable sectors. For most of my working life I have been a business owner or senior executive in business and non-profit sectors. At every phase of my life I took time to exercise my creativity. When I had a studio space, my creative expression flourished and when I had no such space my creativity was channeled into my other endeavors. In 2013 I have renewed my commitment to my visual art and sharing that particular gift with others. I love acrylic paint and currently it is the sole medium I use.

My entrepreneurial career blossomed when I was fifteen after I sold my first pastel portrait for five dollars to another student in high school. I loved studying the face, which led me to drawing caricatures at parties and special events across Canada, including a summer in old Montreal. My first murals were on my bedroom walls as a teenager, and I have continued that fascination to paint large surfaces. I now have 24 murals to my credit. In March of 2018, I painted the above ground sewer pipe on Niagara Street in James Bay - an unusual art project! It now lays in the bedrock tunnel below the water and connects to the Wastewater Treatment Facility in Esquimalt.

Besides painting, I also organize special events and curate art exhibitions. One of the highlights of my career was to be invited by a New Zealand Arts Trust to share a studio with Maori carvers, followed by a solo show in a gallery.

I strive to make a difference in my work and in my community, and live a life of joyful purpose in everything I do.

About the Artist:
Born in Ottawa, grew up in Victoria, worked in London, England and I now live in Shawnigan Lake. I volunteer for the Shawnigan Lake Museum, Steps Ahead Dance Studio at Brentwood College and the Gingerbread Showcase for Habitat for Humanity. I owned two fabric, yarn and art supply stores and have written an article for South Cowichan Life called “Stitch, Rip and Glue” since 1999. Although I frequently write about recycled projects I have created, this year I chose to write every month an article about a recycled item as we need to protect this beautiful “blue green marble” that we all live on. I started painting in 1972 with art lessons from Grace E. Smith. I mainly use acrylic as a medium but I work it in with fabrics, collage work, natural items, small or large furniture pieces and of course canvas, it depends on what inspires me. I also have done two “Chairs for Charity” events and I am pleased to create something beautiful for Habitat for Humanity because it will assist in building homes for others. My business is called Ladybug Creative Arts and work out of my home in Shawnigan Lake.
