What was your inspiration?
We love spending time on the Gulf Islands and wanted to create something that felt west-coasty and cozy. How long did you take to make your creation? 40 hours actual labour (+ 5000 hours emotional labour) What was the most challenging part? Pouring the water for the ocean. The first two rounds crystallized; the third round, we got ahead of ourselves and tried to create waves (bad idea); the fourth layer wouldn’t dry; but the fifth layer worked! What are you most proud of? The fact that the house is still standing! Did you use a unique ingredient or technique? We were lucky to have help from a very enthusiastic family member (John Weston), who 3D-printed us a “wood-pattern stamp” for the fondant, which worked out great. We were also surprised to learn that mixing vodka and corn syrup creates an edible shellac, which we used on the house walls! |
