North Saanich Mayor Geoff Orr was among Habitat for Humanity Victoria staff and volunteers as we gave the news to these families. “It was an incredible feeling to inform these families of their new beginnings”, said Mayor Orr. “We are honoured to have Habitat for Humanity Victoria in our community and welcome these new families with open arms.” “With the housing market where it’s at right now, it’s been impossible to find a suitable home. This is a life-changing moment for us,” said Travis, the father of a six-person family selected for one of these homes. “We’re finally able to breathe.” In April 2021, Habitat for Humanity Victoria officially cut the ribbon to mark the completion of construction of its largest ever built, a 10-unit townhome complex located in North Saanich. This complex is a BUILT GREEN Gold certified project, extending past requirements from the BC Energy Step Code and ultimately reducing utility bills for homeowners. “Habitat for Humanity Victoria is thrilled with the caring, family-oriented community that has come together in the heart of the Peninsula,” said Tiffany Gates, Director of Family Services. Seven of the homes in this complex are currently occupied. These two families will join our Homeownership program. One of the vacant homes is a fully accessible unit equipped with an elevator, which will be occupied by a family needing such accommodation. As a part of their agreement, each family will complete volunteer hours with Habitat for Humanity Victoria before moving into their home. A key ceremony will occur later this year to officially welcome each family into their new homes.
