Family Information
Habitat
for Humanity Victoria has a Family Selection Committee that considers
the following criteria when reviewing the applications for potential
"Homeowner Partners".
Residency
The applicants are Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants and have lived in Greater Victoria a minimum of two years.
Present Housing
The applicants presently live in inadequate, sub-standard housing and are unable to obtain adequate housing through conventional means. Inadequate, sub-standard housing may include problems with any of the following: the structure, electrical or sewage service systems, heating system, or failure to meet city property maintenance standards. The ages and sex of household members and the adequacy of space and bedrooms in present housing will also be considered. The percentage of monthly gross income that is currently spent on housing is determined. Applicants will be required to fully disclose their financial situation to a Habitat Family Selection Committee Member.
Need
The applicant(s) must have at least one child and must meet, but not exceed, basic income levels:

Ability to Pay
Since the homeowner partner will be buying their home from Habitat, they must demonstrate their ability to pay the monthly mortgage payment. This payment will include not only the mortgage payment but also the payment for taxes and insurance. Habitat will work with the partner to determine if this payment will jeopardize their ability to meet all the other family financial obligations and expenses. No interest is charged on the loan for a Habitat Home.
Willingness and Ability to Partner with Habitat
When a household is selected, they become a 'partner family' in the Habitat movement. To become a partner family, there must be an agreement to complete 500 Volunteer Hours prior to moving into the home. These Volunteer Hours are completed by assisting in the construction of your home as well as other Habitat Homes. The work may include clearing the lot, painting, helping with construction, delivering food to volunteers or working for the Habitat organization with the distribution of information. Relatives and friends may help by contributing up to 100 of the 500 Volunteer Hours. After moving into the house, the Family Support Committee will maintain an ongoing relationship with the Habitat family. The applicants agree to abide by the rules, regulations and criteria as established by Habitat for Humanity Victoria in accordance with National Habitat for Humanity Regulations.
The selection of partners is done by the Family Selection Committee. Habitat does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, colour, age, disability, religion, marital status, or because all or part of the application's income is derived from public assistance programs.
